Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) Faculty of Health Sciences Emergency
Aid and Disaster Management Department participated in an important event organized to increase the disaster preparedness and response capacities of its students. Between September 20-30, 2024, 15 female and 15 male students from MAKÜ participated in the "Volunteer Disaster Leaders Training Camp" held at the Turkish Red Crescent's camp area in Ankara Çamkoru. The camp was planned in two separate periods, with the first five days for female students and the next five days for male students. In both groups, students underwent an intensive training program to develop the skills necessary for disaster management and response processes. Theoretical knowledge was supported by practical studies in the trainings, aiming for participants to gain leadership and effective intervention skills in disaster situations. The camp program included trainings on critical topics such as disaster response methods, nutrition organization, communication techniques, and tent setup. These trainings were conducted both theoretically and practically by expert trainers in the field. Participants had the opportunity to work with realistic scenarios regarding the challenges they might face in the field after a disaster. Additionally, with fun group activities organized as part of the training, participants reinforced both teamwork and the spirit of solidarity. This event not only focused on developing technical knowledge and skills but also strengthened the sense of volunteerism and social responsibility among students. Students who had the opportunity to learn about the national and international activities of the Turkish Red Crescent better understood the importance of social contribution in disaster management processes. The Department Head stated that such events greatly contribute to both the personal and professional development of students and expressed their gratitude to the Turkish Red Crescent for supporting the collaboration. MAKÜ will continue to contribute to socially beneficial projects with such organizations that enhance the knowledge and competencies of its students.
